1. Registering for School


If your child has received an offer for a seat in one of our fantastic schools through our school choice program and is not currently enrolled as a New Haven Public School student (students attending local charter schools like Achievement First, Highville, and Booker T. Washington Academy are not considered NHPS students), please utilize this online portal to register your child for the upcoming school year.

Are you ready to enroll a new student into a New Haven Public Schools?

If your answer is yes, please prepare the following documents to be scanned or photographed and uploaded through our online portal. To finalize the registration process, you will need to upload (preferred), scan, or fax the following documents to the Office of School Choice & Enrollment:

The online registration process is both QUICK and EASY. You may complete your registration at in-person or by following the links provided below.

  • Necessary documents must be uploaded through our online registration portal or delivered in person to the Office of School Choice & Enrollment, located at 54 Meadow Street, 1st Floor.   • Please be aware that no child will be assigned to one of our schools until all required documentation, including student health documents, have been submitted and fully reviewed by the Office of School Choice & Enrollment and the New Haven Health Department.

Important: Students will not be enrolled or allowed to enter our school buildings if they do not possess up-to-date health documents, as mandated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

What Health Documentation is needed?

  • These critical health documents must be uploaded before you can register your NEW student!
  • Please request your doctor's office to use the Health Assessment Record (HAR-3).

To register a student for school you must provide: 

  • The Photo ID of the parent or legal guardian of the child (New Haven resident)
    Registration can only be completed by is the biological parent or legal guardian. Proof of legal guardianship is required if the adult registering the child is not the legal parent. 
  • The Birth certificate (long form) or active passport of the child.
  • (2) documents proving primary residency 

What documents can I use to verify my home address? 

Acceptable proof of address must be two of the following items

  • An active lease that has been signed by the landowner.
  • A mortgage or deed that clearly displays the parent or guardian’s name and their primary home address.
  • If you are unable to provide a signed lease or mortgage statement, you will need to submit two (2) proofs of residence in the parent or guardian’s name from one of the categories listed below:

Tier 1 Documents 

  • A Home Utility Bill (e.g. Electric, Water, Gas, Sewer, Cable/Internet) dated within the last 60 calendar days or an appropriate transfer of services from the utility provider. 

Tier 2 Documents 

  • Active Motor Vehicle insurance, SNAP documentation or a health insurance benefits statement from the State of CT (e.g. Husky or Access Health)

The Office of School Choice & Enrollment may require additional documentation if found necessary to verify the child’s eligibility for school accommodations in New Haven. 

If a parent is not able to provide proof of residency (e.g. they are not listed on a lease and have not utilities in their name) they must complete a NHPS Residency Affidavit. This document must be notarized and submitted to the Office of School Choice & Enrollment along with additional information from the adult with whom they are residing. What are the next steps?

Once you have completed the online registration and uploaded all of your necessary documents you will be contacted by the Office of School Choice & Enrollment regarding your child’s enrollment within 7-10 business days. We apologize for the extended timeframes.
