Hill Regional Career High Magnet School focuses on providing students with the skills and education necessary to pursue further study in college in the fields of Health/Science or Business/Technology. Ninety-eight percent of Career graduates go on to study in two- or four-year colleges. In October of 2008, US News & World Reports cited Hill Regional Career Magnet High School for the second consecutive year as one of America's best 1500 high schools.
A college preparatory high school, Career models students' class experience to resemble college, with focused areas of study and class 82 minutes class periods. Career offers Advanced Placement courses in Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Statistics, English Language (11), English Literature (12) US History, US Government, Psychology, and Spanish. It also offers honors and college preparatory courses in every subject area, and students can pursue independent studies at local colleges to earn college credits. Classes and internships supported with resources provided by Yale University Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Southern Connecticut State University Department of Nursing, and Yale-New Haven Hospital, the National Academy of Finance and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce afford students in Career’s Health/Science or Business Computer focus areas to graduate with state-of-the-art knowledge and skills and real-life experience.
Career also offers students specialized instruction in the areas of health/science and finance and information technology. Students have the opportunity to network with the graduate students attending Yale University Schools of Medicine and Nursing; participate at Yale New Haven Hospital or gain access to local business resources and apply skills learned in class to “real world” situations. Class instruction includes economics, finance and banking.
Teachers, guidance counselors and parents help students choose a focused area of study, in addition to their core academic classes. Students complete 28 credits to graduate, more than mandated by the state. All students must take one year of Latin; health/science students must take two years of Latin. Additional foreign language courses are highly encouraged and keyboarding classes are required.
In addition to a challenging academic program, Career offers an athletic program that includes competitive teams in the following areas: Boys' soccer, girls' soccer, volleyball, Fall cross-country, boys' basketball, girls' basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, spring track, golf and tennis.
Career athletic teams are competitive at all levels, and consistently make the State playoffs in competition for State Championships. Our teams are supported by our Cheerleaders, a group which, in addition to providing great spirit at games, itself annually competes in the State Cheerleading competition.
There are a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and activities, including Spanish, French and Latin Clubs, a Chess Club, a Dance Team, a Diversity Team, a Cooperative International Studies Program, a Debate Team, Drama and Book Clubs, Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), and our Robotics program, which has consistently participated in regional and national competitions as far away as Atlanta, Georgia.
