Our Mission

Ross Woodward Classical Studies Magnet School places an emphasis on the classical tradition of educating the whole child. We encourage an appreciation for the universal principles of truth, justice, honesty and respect. We support a rigorous classical curriculum through which students engage in studies of great works over time. In pursuit of excellence, Ross Woodward focuses learning on that which is timeless and of lasting significance. Ross Woodward Magnet School of Classical Studies offers a unique curriculum rooted in the liberal arts tradition. From Kindergarten through Grade Eight, students explore great works in literature, the arts, innovation and exploration, while studying corresponding periods of history, scientific discovery, and mathematical reasoning.

National and state standards are met by integrating the curriculum put forth by New Haven Public Schools with project-based units of study unique to Ross Woodward. Each unit of study explores great works over time. Students apply knowledge and skills to interdisciplinary performances and projects in order to demonstrate understanding.

Ross Woodward Magnet School of Classical Studies is a Paideia school. Paideia emphasizes seminars, or group dialogue to build understanding of ideas and values. We work closely with The National Paideia Center at The University of North Carolina to develop and strengthen our practices. Paideia is an approach to teaching and learning that strongly supports the values of a classical education. It promotes:

  • An integrated core curriculum for all students Individualized assessment based on personal growth
  • A school culture dedicated to lifelong learning
  • An environment in which students are active participants in the democratic process

Through the seminar model, students not only practice making meaning and reaching understanding, they refine their ability to communicate that understanding to others. At Ross Woodward, a classical education embraces the universal principles of truth, justice, honesty and respect. As a school community, we aim to instill these principles in the mind and character of each student.

What our students are saying...

The most exciting thing about Ross Woodward is the seminars. We have a lot of diversity within our school. The kids here have various opinions about things. I like participating in seminars because we hear other people’s opinions and learn about what they think. -Jasmine L., Grade 8
