Located in a state-of-the-art facility in the Westville area of New Haven, Mauro-Sheridan Science, Technology and Communications Interdistrict Magnet School emphasizes science, communication and technology. These magnet themes are embedded in a strong math and language arts program which integrates project-based learning throughout the curricula. A video production studio supports a student-produced daily news broadcast, and the applied technology/robotics lab engages students in exploring robotics, physics and math. In addition, students have access to a computer science lab, CLAB (Classroom lab), electronic music classroom, and science discovery room where a variety of animals – from aquatic animals and birds to snakes and tarantulas – live in cages. Through interaction with these species, students learn through experience about ecology, ecosystems, biology and habitats.
Additional technology includes ELMO/Mimeo Interactive Presentation Screens, LCD projectors, laptop and destop computers, n-computing modules, digital still and video cameras, V-Brick digital distribution system and other equipment. Video conferencing equipment provides opportunities for distance learning. Mauro-Sheridan is committed to bringing the world to our students and providing them with the technology tools and communication skills in order to explore it.
Mauro-Sheridan is one of the first fifty NASA Explorer Schools and the first Connecticut school to be selected. Students of all grade levels particpate in many NASA activities such as Star Night at Leitner Planetarium (Yale University), Women in Engineering Day, Blast Off Day and other exciting events. Our sustainability program is supported by Hamilton Sundstrand, a division of United Technologies Corporation known for its spacesuit design. Hamilton Sundstrand sponsors an annual aeronautics contest. Past winners have won trips to New York City, the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The home-school connection in conjunction with our full time Family Educator is further supported through the school’s website at www.mauro-sheridan.net where parents and students can access the weekly newsletter as well as up-to-date information about upcoming activities, student services, and teachers’ individual web pages highlighting classroom information and homework assignments to name a few.
The school seeks to integrate school, home and community to foster academic excellence and social responsibility. As a Dr. James Comer School, Mauro-Sheridan employs the Comer Pathway Model to direct daily learning. The Comer Model is committed to working collaboratively with students, teachers, parents and community to provide a learning environment where all children can learn and develop to their maximum potential. (Comer School Development Program)
Students receive a multitude of experiences to foster growth as critical thinkers and responsible citizens who appreciate all cultures and beliefs. Above and beyond our exceptional resources and partnernships, Mauro-Sheridan approaches education holistically; all aspects of the developing child are vital in promoting learning for all.
