Davis Street School seeks to empower students to successfully meet the challenges of change through the Comer educational philosophy which recognizes that children need nurturing through a collaboration of teachers, administrators, families and community. This philosophy has been enhanced through the school's adoption by the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education as a CommPACT School.
Schools which are built on the collaborative efforts of those most directly involved with education: COMMunity, Parents, Administrators, Children and Teachers. The school’s nurturing environment promotes student excellence in academics. Students learn to be goal setters and independent thinkers by developing their social skills and learning how to make good choices. The school’s success can be seen in their Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores, which continually show progress toward maintaining the Annual Yearly Progress status.
Using the theme of celebrating literacy through the arts, technology and multiculturalism, Davis embraces diversity and inclusion through ongoing thematic units of study that focus on other nations. An annual International Day celebration provides students with the opportunity to share what they’ve learned with parents and the community.
Davis Street is the first elementary school in the state to have two bands: a marching band and a concert band. They have been asked to perform for the governor and at a variety of events around the state. The band also performs at local town parades and celebrations in the area.
Students at Davis are encouraged to wear uniforms. Research has found that students are more focused and perform better in school without the distraction of keeping up with fashion trends. Uniforms are available online at www.dennis.com.
