School Overview

At Barnard Environmental Studies School, environmental science is the connecting web used in all areas of study. Barnard’s environmental focus promotes values of respect and concern for both humans and nature and encourages students to become active stewards of both.

Completely renovated and expanded in 2006, Barnard’s facilities include the largest solar panel display in Connecticut, an AWS WeatherBug station, three greenhouses, a student maintained courtyard garden and a Nature Center accessed with a pedestrian bridge to access and explore the West River located across the street. Computers in every classroom and two wireless mobile labs enhance students’ research and distance learning opportunities with the global community.

Teachers use a healthy ecosystem as their model, connecting ideas, concepts and skills from all areas of instruction to reinforce and deepen children’s learning. Many field trips are planned that align with the curriculum to provide real world educational experiences for students in all grade levels. During Environmental Round-ups students share new concepts learned with peers and parents. Students have opportunities for authentic experiences such as working in the courtyard garden raising vegetables, raising Atlantic salmon eggs that they later release into the Connecticut River and learning weather trends as they monitor data from the WeatherBug station.

In April, students take part in a week long Earth Day celebration. Each day is filled with special activities that explore alternative energy, reducing our carbon footprint and ways to protect and value our natural world. Our educational partners like Norwalk Maritime Aquarium, Kellogg Environmental Center and the Peabody Museum provide their expertise for the celebration.

What our students are saying...

"Barnard is a great school; you learn a lot of things that you are supposed to learn in high school. We go on field trips and it is a really fun school. The most exciting thing we do here is working in the garden planting sunflower seeds in the spring and coming back in the fall to see how large they became." -Corey, Grade 6

“We learn a lot about saving and creating energy. We have gone on a lot of field trips to learn these things.” -Lorant, 8th grade

"I’ve been at Barnard for 7 years. During that time I’ve learned about being green and helping our environment.  My greatest experience was being part of an article for Dynamath Magazine that had to do with solar energy at Barnard.” -Michilla, 7th grade

“I’ve only been here for 1 year, but I’ve learned a lot about being green. This school is really global and you learn about he community and how to make it a better place” -Ralik, 8th grade
