School Overview

The mission of MicroSociety Magnet School is to develop the whole child to become a contributing member of our global society through inquiry, collaboration, deep study, and experiential learning.

At MicroSociety Magnet School ….. We Choose to Make the World a Better Place.

MicroSociety Magnet School is a miniature society often referred to as Microville. As citizens of Microville, students understand the importance of an educated, engaged electorate. Students actively participate in government, and social agencies, providing meaningful constructs for both academic and social/ emotional learning. As students take part in Microville social structures and government, they practice real world problem solving, and gain highly desirable and necessary 21st century skills such as:

  • Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking
  • Problem Solving
  • Creative Innovation
  • Communication

Within all Microville classrooms, students develop a strong repertoire of strategies to deal with a myriad of social and academic challenges. Microville citizens make the connection between school and our outside world, providing context, which makes learning purposeful, enjoyable, and meaningful. Our community learning environment teaches students to take responsibility for their own education, while building self-esteem, motivation, empathy and good character. In order to educate all of our children well, MicroSociety embraces the Responsive Classroom approach to education. The Responsive Classroom approach rests upon these foundational ideas:

  • Our Best Knowledge of How Children Learn
  • The Importance of Knowing Students Developmentally, Individually and Culturally
  • Social and Academic Learning Go Hand in Hand MicroSociety Magnet 311 Valley St. New Haven, CT 06519 PreK4 to 8th Grade Preference: sibling

What our students are saying...

"The most exciting experiences I’ve had while attending MicroSociety are being a part of Microville’s Elections, Inaugurations and Town Meetings. I feel safe and like being noticed in front of a lot of people when I get awards, like perfect attendance and citizen of the month. This makes me feel really good!" -Roger, 8th grade

"The most exciting experience I've had while attending MicroSociety is being an employee in a micro venture because you feel mature and responsible; especially when you earn money for the jobs you do. I think other kids should attend MicroSociety because it gives you a taste of what the real world is going to be like." -Nyasia, 8th Grade, New Haven
