The New Haven Public Schools has an enviable track record in offering quality Schools of Choice. We are proud to host the largest Interdistrict Magnet School Program in the state, offering urban and suburban families a rich array of quality programs against the backdrop of a $1.5 billion Citywide School Construction Program.
Our magnet program draws students from approximately 28 different towns outside of New Haven and strives for racial, ethnic and economic diversity throughout the schools. We believe diversity is an important aspect that enhances the education experience for all students.
These schools offer students non-traditional learning environments that seek to deepen their interest and focus on school. As you will see in this brochure, the programs offered span from environmental, science and technology studies to performing arts, multiculturalism and citizenship. Each school has a unique and successful method to engage students and bring out their love of learning.
Our Citywide Construction Program adds to the rich environment our schools provide. With 31 schools renovated or rebuilt to date, and more in the design pipeline, we are proud of our program and the learning environments that we provide.
As has been reported, New Haven is pushing forward on a mission to be the best urban school district in the country. To achieve this distinction we have initiated a school reform plan which is focused on reaching some important goals, including the reduction of the achievement gap and the dropout rate, as well as ensuring that all our students attend and graduate from college. Our willingness to collaborate and agree that significant changes are needed make me confident that we can meet and exceed these goals.
Finally, at every level of our system (elementary, middle and high) there are magnet schools and neighborhood schools available for parents to consider as they plan their child’s education. We encourage you to visit our schools and to talk to other students and parents. The New Haven Public School system has a lot to offer and we hope you will agree.
Respectfully yours,
Dr. Reginald R. Mayo, Superintendent
