A Message from Superintendent of Schools

Dear Families,

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will have to make as a parent. I invite you to explore the exciting schools that are a part of the New Haven Interdistrict Magnet Program.

In New Haven Public Schools, we have the largest magnet school program in Connecticut, with more than 20 schools with magnet themes ranging from the arts to engineering and science to aquaculture to international communication. Our magnet schools offer specialized areas of study as well as rigorous curriculum and a strong sense of community.

New Haven’s state-of-the-art school facilities are second to none thanks to its $1.6 billion school construction program that has constructed or renovated 36 schools over the past 15 years. Each school has a unique design and a unique theme, but all schools carry a common mission – to give students access to the best education possible.

You may have heard about New Haven School Change, our nationally recognized initiative that seeks to close the achieve- ment gap, slash the dropout rate and get every student on the path to college. Al- ready in year three, School Change is

changing the way kids learn in the classroom by strengthening teachers, raising the bar on achievement and emphasizing school climate. I want New Haven to be the best urban school dis- trict in America. Our magnet school pro- gram invites suburban students to join New Haven students in ex- periencing that com- mitment to excellence.

As New Haven moves forward with School Change, we recognize the importance of building communities of support around our children by empowering parents. As a parent of a New Haven magnet school student, you will have access to extraordinary resources, including our successful Parent University. In November, 300 parents came out to Gateway Community College for a day of free workshops aimed at helping parents support their children and enrich their own lives. I know you want the best for your child. I want the same thing.

This booklet contains information on all New Haven magnet schools as well as open houses, magnet school fairs and the application process. I invite you to explore our magnet school program and find a school that will set your child on the path to success.
