John S. Martinez School uses its location next to the Mill Rivera and Long Island Sound as the inspiration for its aquatic literacy and science program.
The themes of water and ecology are brought into all areas of the school’s curriculum. Field trips to aquariums, nearby waterways and aquatic centers bring lessons to life.
The school’s motto is “The Sun always shines at Martinez.” Built to resemble a sailing ship, Martinez is housed in a newly constructed building designed around an inviting courtyard where students garden, sit to read, and gather for nature studies. The building’s design allows for plentiful natural light and creates a warm feeling that enhances students’ desire for learning.
The school boasts a “teaching” swimming pool and swim teachers certified in CPR, giving all children the opportunity to learn to swim. The library media center is enclosed by a stained glass wall that depicts Connecticut’s aquatic plants and animals. The school also features state-of-the-art computer and science labs.
Students at Martinez are encouraged to wear uniforms of navy bottoms and white tops. Navy and gray tops are alternate top colors. Research has found that students are more focused and perform better in school without the distraction of keeping up with fashion trends.
