Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) is a public college preparatory middle and high school that challenges students to imagine, investigate and invent while preparing them for demanding STEM programs at the collegiate level.
ESUMS allows students to advance in the areas of math and science at an accelerated pace. Many of our students enter the 9th grade taking Biology, Geometry, Algebra II, or even Pre-Calculus. AP courses are available to students beginning in 11th grade and UNH courses are offered to select student who qualify as early as 10th grade. The engineering program follows Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Students who participate in PLTW engage in activities-based, project-based and problem-based learning curriculum daily. At the close of each year in PLTW, students who pass the course exam receive college credit for these courses. PLTW alumni pursue collegiate level engineering and technology coursework at five times the national average for typical first year college students, as well as achieving a GPA above 3.0 with average grades of B or better in calculus, physics and chemistry.
The Engineering and Science University Magnet School opened its doors in the fall of 2008. Currently enrolled with students from grades 6-10, the goal is to enroll 88 new students each successive year, with full enrollment of 616 students in grades 6-12, expected in 2014. ESUMS high school has recently partnered with EdConnection’s Center for 21st Century Skills to provide students with enhanced curriculum in such courses as Biology and Skills21. We also boast an award winning debate team and competitive robotics team.

2012 Lottery Results Data
2012 Lottery Results Data
In an effort to help make families make informed decisions about choosing magnet and charter schools, for the first time NHPS is publishing last year’s lottery data for each magnet and charter school at the bottom of each page. Although the data changes year to year, you can see a snapshot by grade level of how many seats were available, how many applicants applied, how many applicants lived in the neighborhood and how many applicants had siblings. Seats and applicants are specific to New Haven and suburban residents. Hopefully this added information, along with attending Open Houses, will give families the information necessary to choose schools that will fit the individual needs of their children.
