Overview
School Overview
Since 1859, James Hillhouse High School continues to be an educational leader in New Haven by transforming itself from one big comprehensive school into 4 smaller magnet schools to improve student achievement. The smaller and intimate school environment enables each staff member to know the needs, interests and aspirations of each student. Staff will be able to provide academic, social and emotional support in order for each student to succeed. The four smaller magnet schools at James Hillhouse High School are:
LOWER HOUSE
1) Freshmen Academy - designed to help students make a successful transition from middle school to high school. Physically located on the 3rd Floor, freshmen are taught in technologically advanced classrooms in a supportive, nurturing and structured environment.
2) Sophomore Academy - following the successful completion of the Freshmen Academy, students are enrolled in the Sophomore Academy in order to continue their focus on their academic courses by maximizing their learning potential through James Comer’s six developmental pathways. After students finish their first two years at Hillhouse, they get the opportunity to choose between two smaller magnet schools:

Quotes
What our students are saying...
“Since I’ve been here, Hillhouse has changed for the better. With a new principal, Hillhouse is built for success. There are more after-school classes, additional AP classes for our students that want a challenge and a student recreation center to reward hard work. Hillhouse is NEW, IMPROVED and all about ACADEMICS!” -Nicolet,12th grade
2012 Lottery Results Data
2012 Lottery Results Data
In an effort to help make families make informed decisions about choosing magnet and charter schools, for the first time NHPS is publishing last year’s lottery data for each magnet and charter school at the bottom of each page. Although the data changes year to year, you can see a snapshot by grade level of how many seats were available, how many applicants applied, how many applicants lived in the neighborhood and how many applicants had siblings. Seats and applicants are specific to New Haven and suburban residents. Hopefully this added information, along with attending Open Houses, will give families the information necessary to choose schools that will fit the individual needs of their children.
