MAGNET FAIR:Attend the New Haven Interdistrict Magnet Fair on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 12:00 - 2:00pm at Hill Regional Career High School—140 Legion Ave., New Haven, CT 06519. Each school will have a booth staffed with principals, teachers, students and parents to answer your questions about their programs. The Magnet Office will have a booth staffed with Magnet/Registration staff to answer your questions and to help you fill out the Magnet applications. You can submit your applications to the Magnet/Registration staff the night of the Magnet Fair.OPEN HOUSE / TOURS:Each school will have Open Houses and Tours in their buildings during the months of January and February. Please attend the Open House/Tours for the schools that interest you and your child. Check the flyer on page 3 of this booklet for specific dates and times for each school.PREFERENCE:Sibling preference, will be given when a brother or sister is currently attending the school to which the applicant has applied. The brother or sister must live in the same household and have the same parent.Sibling Preference does not guarantee that your child will be placed in a Magnet, Charter or ACES school. It means that your child will be given priority in the Lottery. APPLICATION DEADLINE:All students, including those living in the district of a magnet school, must submit a Magnet Application by Friday, February 17, 2012. Submit applications to the Magnet Office at 54 Meadow Street or apply online at www.newhavenmagnetschools.com. Do not submit your application to the school or school personnel. Fill out one application per child. |
PRE-K & KINDERGARTEN GUIDELINES:To apply for PreK-3, child must be 3-years-old by January 1, 2013. To apply for PreK-4, child must be 4-years-old by January 1, 2013. To apply for Kindergarten, child must be 5-years-old by January 1, 2013.CHOOSE YOUR SCHOOLS:You may list up to three different school choices on the application, but you are only required to make one choice. Select only those schools your child is willing to attend. The priority will be to assign your child to their first preference; however, your child may be assigned to any one of your choices.RECEIPT LETTER:Once your application is received and processed by the Magnet Office, you will receive a Receipt Letter. The Receipt Letter is your proof that the Magnet Office received your application. If you do not receive a Receipt Letter before the Lottery on March 13, call the Magnet Office at 203-946-7415. The Receipt Letter will contain all of the information you provided on the application and a PIN Number. Check the Receipt Letter to make sure the information and choices are correct. If you find a mistake, immediately call the Magnet Office, give the PIN Number and the mistake will be corrected. This must be done before the Lottery on March 13.THE MAGNET LOTTERY:Those placed in a magnet school will be assigned to one of their choices by a random selection “lottery” process.Those accepted will reflect a geographic balance. The Magnet Lottery will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Gateway Center—Board of Education—54 Meadow Street, 1st Floor. It is open to the public. Results of the Magnet Lottery will be mailed by March 16. |
LOTTERY RESULTS:If your child is successfully placed in a New Haven Interdistrict Magnet School, you must have the Lottery Results letter signed by an official in your local Public School district and bring all registration documents to the Magnet/Registration Office by the deadline on the letter.If your child is currently attending a New Haven Interdistrict Magnet School and your child was placed in another magnet school in the lottery, you must have the Lottery Results letter signed by an official in your local Public School district and return it to the Magnet/Registration Office by the deadline on the letter. DO NOT CALL to accept the magnet seat; however, you do call to decline the magnet seat by the date on your letter. GRADE RETENTION:In the event that an applicant is retained, but the applicant was accepted to a Magnet, Charter or ACES school, the applicant will not be able to keep the seat. Their application will become null and void and the parent must fill out a new application with the correct grade.WAITING LIST:Students not selected for a magnet, school in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list for all schools selected. Students will be called from the waiting list periodically to fill any vacancies that occur. The Waiting List will be maintained until October 31, 2012. After that date, the waiting list will be discontinued and you will be notified.LATE APPLICATIONS:Late applications received after February 17 will be accepted but may not be processed until after the March 13, 2012 Lottery. All late applicants will be placed at the end of the waiting lists and Neighborhood and Sibling preference will not be given to late applicants. |
