Our Mission

Edgewood Magnet has been named a Tier 1 school by the New Haven Board of Education for it’s academic performance and positive school climate. An arts-integrated program uses the highly motivating vehicle of the arts to educate and inspire academic excellence. The school’s small size and active group of parents help create a sense of community.

Edgewood’s belief that all children can learn led to the planning and implementation of arts-integrated project based learning. This past year, our kindergarten through grade 4 teachers, participated in training from the Yale Center for British Art in a program called Visual Literacy. Children are taught to “read a picture” to increase vocabulary and develop higher order thinking which provides a successful transition to writing. Student lessons are taught in the classroom and the museum. The teachers also work with the Yale Art Gallery and the Peabody Museum.

All students in grades K-6 participate monthly in a Town Meeting. This assembly allows students the opportunity to perform as classrooms celebrate current curriculum in a creative manner. Parents are invited to attend.

Parent participation is strongly encouraged. In addition to Town Meetings, there are many PTA sponsored events throughout the school year. Harvest Hoedown and Arts Night are two of the favorites.

All in all, most agree that Edgewood is a special place where “mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow.”

What our students are saying...

“In my nine years at Edgewood, I have been guided and have grown to what I am today. I have learned very important lessons, and I’m not talking just academics. I have been taught patience and tolerance, whether it was for a teacher or a student. I feel there is always someone I can talk to. It may sound like a cliche, but this school is probably the smartest, friendliest place in New Haven.” -Lewis, 8th grade

“I’ve attended Edgewood since Kindergarten and now I’m in the 6th grade. My little sister goes to Edgewood and my big brother and sister used to go here too. This is my family’s school. I’m lucky to go to Edgewood because it is a place where people treat you the way they want to be treated. We are a Tier 1 school and that makes me feel proud.” -JahMarley, grade 6
