School Overview

At Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School, environmental science is the connecting web used in all areas of study. Barnard’s environmental focus promotes values of respect and concern for both humans and nature and encourages students to become active stewards of both. Barnard was completely renovated and expanded in 2006 to include the largest solar panel display in Connecticut, an AWS WeatherBug station, 3 greenhouses and a student maintained courtyard garden. The Nature Center can be accessed by a pedestrian bridge to explore the West River located across the street. Computers in every classroom and two wireless mobile labs enhance students’ research and distance learning opportunities with the global community. The Environmental curriculum integrates literacy, math, history and science. The curriculum is organized around four over arching themes; fresh water, energy, migrations and Long Island Sound. Our many partnerships with environmental groups, institutions of higher learning and museums offer students a rich variety of experiences that will prepare them to become stewards of the earth.

At the end of the year, students sponsor a week long Earth Day celebration where they present class projects and participate in hands-on experiments brought to the school by education partners like Mystic Aquarium and the Peabody Museum.

What our students are saying...

"The teachers at Barnard make learning fun and they care very much about us. We take lots of field trips, enjoy fun activities and learn about the environment in fun new ways. Barnard is the best school for every kid interested in having fun while learning." -Trevon, 7th grade

"Barnard is the best. All of the teachers are great and we go on fantastic trips like museums and the West River. My favorite thing is the beautiful garden. It has so many different plants, fruits and vegetables. Every year we learn new things and that’s why I will stay here until high school. I recommend Barnard to every child in the world." -Malakhi, grade 5

"Barnard is the best because we help the environment. Students learn solutions to help all kinds of environmental problems like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. We also go on lots of field trips to learn about conserving our planet." -Bryan, grade 5
