Toni Harp, Mayor, City of New HavenA Welcome from
New Haven Mayor
Toni Harp

To the Families of
New Students,

I’m delighted to welcome you to New Haven’s kindergarten enrollment process! Sending a child for his or her first day of school is certainly a memorable milestone and not to be taken lightly. I remember very well, having been through it three times with my own children.

In the time since, education has been transformed. No longer is a teacher at the front of the room solely responsible for dispensing information to a large group of students. Now, teachers, specialists, and other professionals use a team teaching approach to maximize the potential of each student, helping him or her pursue an individualized learning pathway.

This year’s enrollment strategy is similarly transformed, because students no longer attend their neighborhood school automatically. Instead, New Haven Public Schools will make available to you a School Choice guide with the enrollment schedule and a description of each of your kindergarten options. A series of school fairs and open houses will follow for a month or so afterward so families can visit and tour individual facilities that interest them.

All this will help families match preferences for their children with available schools and programs. Our goal is to help each family and each new kindergarten student feel as excited about the start of school as city officials and educators are each year. We want to help your child begin a rich, rewarding experience in New Haven Public Schools.

We think this new, standardized enrollment process will help match students and families with the most suitable school and kindergarten program and we hope you’ll agree. Please give us your feedback on this new approach as you begin this most important chapter in your child’s development.
